Lake Kabetogama covers roughly 24,000 acres inside Voyageurs National Park and is one of Minnesota's ten largest lakes. Its south shore is lined with family cabin resorts on short roads off County Road 122, and the Ash River Trail resorts sit on the Ash River at the east end.
Walleye comes first for nearly every guide here, followed by northern pike and smallmouth bass. In winter the Park Service runs an ice road across the lake between the Kabetogama and Ash River visitor centers.

Ice fishing: day houses and sleepers
A few resorts and one outfitter rent heated ice houses and use the park's ice road. Only Sandy Point publishes winter rates, so call ahead.

Seasons at a glance

V. Field notes
The park and the ice road
- Lake Kabetogama is inside Voyageurs National Park. The park runs two visitor centers here: Kabetogama Lake on the south shore and Ash River in the old Meadwood Lodge.
- In winter the Kabetogama ice road runs between the boat launches at those two visitor centers. It's open to cars and trucks under 7,000 lb, the speed limit is 30 mph, and snowmobiles aren't allowed on it.
- Set fish houses at least 50 feet from the ice road and snowmobile trails, don't drive beyond the plowed sections, and check the park's Winter Ice & Conditions Report first.
VI. Regulations
Fishing rules
2026–27 season (May 9, 2026 – February 28, 2027)
- Covers Kabetogama Lake, Sullivan Bay and the Ash River up to Ash River Falls.
- Walleye and sauger season: May 9, 2026 – February 28, 2027.
- Walleye and sauger: 6 combined, no more than 4 of them walleye. Walleye from 18 through 26 inches go back immediately. You can keep one walleye over 26 inches.
- Northern pike (Northeast Zone): May 9, 2026 – February 28, 2027. 2 in possession; release every pike from 30 through 40 inches; one over 40 inches allowed.
- Smallmouth and largemouth bass: catch-and-release only from March 1 to May 8, then 6 combined from May 9, 2026 to February 28, 2027.
- Muskie: June 6 – November 30, 1 fish, 54-inch minimum.
- Crappie 10 and sunfish 20, open all year.
- Fish houses must be off the ice by midnight on March 15, 2027.
- Voyageurs National Park's live-bait and private-boat limits apply to its interior lakes only, not to Kabetogama.

How much does a fishing guide cost on Lake Kabetogama?
A guide boat for 1–2 anglers runs $600–$700 for a full day. Rates are per boat, not per person, and usually include bait and gas.
What's the walleye limit on Lake Kabetogama?
6 walleye and sauger combined, no more than 4 of them walleye. Release every walleye from 18 through 26 inches; you can keep one over 26 inches (2026–27 DNR rules).
When are Kabetogama resorts open?
Most open from mid-May to early October. A handful, including Kec's Kove, Sandy Point and some Ash River resorts, also open in winter for ice fishing.
Is Lake Kabetogama in Voyageurs National Park?
Yes. The park has visitor centers on the lake at Kabetogama and Ash River, and runs a winter ice road between them.
