Lake of the Woods covers about 950,400 acres across Minnesota, Ontario and Manitoba. 307,010 of those acres are in Minnesota, and the DNR samples them every year as one of the state's ten large walleye lakes.
People come for walleye and sauger: from charter boats and guide boats in summer, and from heated fish houses on plowed ice roads in winter. The 2024–25 winter alone logged about 2 million angler hours on the Minnesota side.

IV. The almanac
Seasons at a glance
- May 9, 2026Walleye and sauger season opens. Charter boats run from the opener to the end of October.
- April 24 – May 7Sturgeon keep season (1 per year, 45–50 inches or over 75). Catch-and-release May 8–15.
- May 16 – June 30Sturgeon closed: no fishing for them at all.
- June 20 – November 30Muskie season (1 fish, 50-inch minimum).
- July 1 – September 30Second sturgeon keep season.
- Early DecemberIce season starts once there's 8–12 inches. Walking and ATVs first, then track vehicles, then resorts' plowed and marked roads.
- December – March 31Day houses and sleepers on the ice. Every fish house must be off by midnight March 31.
- March 1 – April 14Rainy River and Four Mile Bay: catch-and-release only for walleye and sauger.

V. Field notes
Getting to the Northwest Angle
- By road the Angle is reached only through Canada, with about 30 miles of gravel at the north end. Bring a passport or other border-crossing document.
- You must report to Canadian border services on the way in and to US Customs when you come back (Jim's Corner). Some resorts have a reporting kiosk on site or use the CBP ROAM app.
- Canada is replacing its Remote Area Border Crossing permit for the Angle with telephone reporting in 2026. Check the CBSA's current rules before you go.
- Island resorts pick guests up by boat from Young's Bay, which sells parking, launch and slips. In winter, resorts run track vehicles from Young's Bay.
VI. From the DNR's nets
What the DNR survey shows

- Walleye averaged 15.5 per net, a little under the 2002–2024 average of 16.6. The three-year average (18.0) is above the DNR's quality target of 14.
- Walleye in the 14–16 inch 'eater' range were above average.
- Offshore nets (33–37 ft of water) caught more walleye than near-shore nets: 19.8 against 14.9 per net.
- Sauger stay abundant. The three-year average (18.8 per net) is above the DNR's target of 16.
- The spawning walleye run at Long Sault Rapids now has mostly large females: the most common length went from about 17 inches in 1982 to about 26 inches.
The 2024–25 winter saw about 2 million angler hours on the Minnesota side.
VII. Regulations
Fishing rules
2026–27 season (May 9, 2026 – April 14, 2027)
- Walleye and sauger season: May 9, 2026 – April 14, 2027.
- Walleye and sauger: 6 combined, no more than 4 of them walleye. Walleye from 19.5 through 28 inches go back immediately. You can keep one walleye over 28 inches.
- Rainy River and Four Mile Bay: the keep season runs May 9, 2026 – February 28, 2027. From March 1 to April 14, all walleye and sauger are catch-and-release.
- Sauger without the head and tail on count as walleye.
- Northern pike: open all year, 3 in possession. Release every pike from 30 through 40 inches; one over 40 inches allowed.
- Lake sturgeon: keep 1 per calendar year (45–50 inches, or over 75) from April 24 to May 7 and July 1 to September 30. Catch-and-release May 8–15 and October 1 – April 23. Closed May 16 – June 30.
- Muskie: June 20 – November 30, 1 fish, 50-inch minimum.
- Crappie 10, smallmouth and largemouth bass 6 combined (open all year), yellow perch 20 a day and 40 in possession.
- One line per angler in open water, two when ice fishing. No gaffs on the Rainy River.
- Fish houses must be off the ice by midnight on March 31. Dark-house spearing runs November 15, 2026 – February 28, 2027.
- On the ice, walleye and pike must stay whole and measurable unless you're cooking them. Keep the carcasses until the end of the day; they count toward your limit.

Questions people ask
How much does a fishing guide cost on Lake of the Woods?
A guide boat for up to 3–4 anglers runs $500–$900 for a full day. A charter or launch boat for up to 6 runs $850–$1,250 for a full day. Rates are per boat, not per person, and usually include bait and gas.
When is the best time to fish Lake of the Woods?
Mid-May to early June and September to October for open-water walleye; mid-December to March for ice fishing. March and early April bring the Rainy River spring run (catch-and-release).
Do I need a passport for the Northwest Angle?
Driving to the Angle crosses into Canada, so you need to report to Canadian and US border services. Some Angle resorts will bring you across the lake by boat from the south shore, which avoids the crossing.
What can you catch?
The DNR manages the Minnesota side for walleye, sauger, yellow perch, northern pike and lake sturgeon. Local guides also target smallmouth, muskie and crappie.
