Leech Lake covers more than 100,000 acres in Cass County and is the third-largest lake entirely within Minnesota. Most of it lies inside the Leech Lake Reservation and the Chippewa National Forest. The town of Walker sits on Walker Bay at the northwest corner, the Whipholt and Pine Point resorts line the south shore, and Federal Dam is at the east outlet.
Walleye comes first for most guides here, and Leech is also a well-known muskie lake. In winter several resorts rent ice houses, and Trapper's Landing plows an ice road.

V. Field notes
The reservation and the landings
- Most of Leech Lake lies inside the Leech Lake Reservation, within the Chippewa National Forest.
- The Walker chamber lists nine public landings: Erickson's Landing, Walker City Park, Shingobee Bay, Stony Point, Whipholt, Brevik, Battle Point, Federal Dam and Sucker Bay.
- In winter Trapper's Landing sells passes for its plowed ice road: $20 a day, $50 a weekend or $300 a season, 10 mph limit.
VI. Regulations
Fishing rules
2026–27 season (May 9, 2026 – February 28, 2027)
- Walleye and sauger season: May 9, 2026 – February 28, 2027.
- Walleye and sauger: 6 combined, no more than 4 of them walleye, and only one walleye over 20 inches.
- Northern pike (North-central Zone): May 9, 2026 – February 28, 2027. 10 in possession, not more than 2 over 26 inches; release every pike from 22 through 26 inches.
- Largemouth bass: catch-and-release only from March 1 to May 22, then 6 combined bass from May 23, 2026 to February 28, 2027.
- Smallmouth bass: catch-and-release March 1 – May 22, keep from May 23 to September 13, then catch-and-release again from September 14.
- Muskie: June 6 – November 30, 1 fish, 54-inch minimum.
- Crappie 5 a day and sunfish 5 a day (Leech Lake special limits). Perch 20 a day and 40 in possession.
- Fish houses must be off the ice by midnight on March 15, 2027.
