Lake Superior is the largest of the Great Lakes, about 31,700 square miles and up to 1,332 feet deep. Minnesota's North Shore runs from Duluth up Highway 61 through Two Harbors, Silver Bay, Tofte and Lutsen to Grand Marais.
Most fishing charters leave from Duluth and the Knife River Marina, trolling for lake trout, coho and chinook salmon from May into early October. Up the shore, lodging is resorts, cabins and five state park campgrounds on the lake.

Charters
Charters run per boat, usually for up to 4 anglers with extra anglers charged on top and 6 the most a boat takes. A half day is 4 to 5 hours and a full day 8. None of the prices below carry a year; they were read from the charters' listings in October 2026.

IV. Regulations
Fishing rules
Lake Superior, 2026–27 (lake trout December 1, 2025 – October 4, 2026, then from December 1, 2026)
- You need a Minnesota angling license and a trout and salmon stamp to fish Minnesota's waters of Lake Superior.
- Lake trout: 3. Season December 1, 2025 – October 4, 2026, then December 1, 2026 – October 3, 2027.
- Salmon (chinook, coho, pink and Atlantic): open all year, 5 combined, 10-inch minimum.
- Rainbow trout (steelhead): keep only fin-clipped fish, 3, 16-inch minimum; release every unclipped steelhead. Brown trout 5, 10-inch minimum, only one over 16. Brook trout and splake 1, 20-inch minimum. Rainbow, brown, brook trout and splake together: 5.
- Walleye: 2, 15-inch minimum. Northern pike: 2. Both May 9, 2026 – March 1, 2027.
- Up to 2 lines on Lake Superior, but only 1 within 100 yards of a stream mouth. Angling from boats is closed October 6 – November 30 between the Duluth ship canal and Chester Creek.

How much does a fishing charter cost on the North Shore?
A charter boat for up to 4 anglers runs $750–$1,000 for a full day. Prices are per boat for up to 4 anglers; most charters add $50 to $150 for each extra angler, up to 6.
Do you need a trout stamp for a Lake Superior charter?
Yes. Every angler fishing Minnesota's waters of Lake Superior needs a Minnesota fishing license and a trout and salmon stamp. Buy both before the trip.
When is the best time for a Lake Superior charter?
Charters run from about May 1 to early October. Coho are usually best in May and June, chinook in June and July, and bigger lake trout in August and September, when the fish are deep.
